Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander has been playing his own brand of laid-back Caribbean and reggae–jazz fusion for half a century. Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare, meanwhile, have been the world’s greatest reggae rhythm section since the midseventies. Judging from a recent video, something truly remarkable happens when the former’s blithe syncopations combine with the latter’s taut rhythmic spring.
