You know what? You’re never too old for a pub crawl. I kept telling myself that when I attended the 18th Annual 2nd Avenue Halloween Pub Crawl. Five bars in Turtle Bay participated in this epic drunken event. As you can imagine, there were a lot of shenanigans. Not as many as you would think there would considering this was an event whose sole purpose was to encourage drinking while dressed as the sexy version of your favorite superhero. So maybe a scantily clad, drunken devil bartender was pouring out shots to costumed patrons. Can you really have a pub crawl and not expect that to happen? Refreshingly, everyone was there to just have a good time. The most noticeable part of the event was the creative costumes everyone wore. As you would expect you had your fair share of yawn worthy, sexy costumes. I was pleasantly surprised by the creative and homemade costumes in abundance.
There was a young girl dressed as her Facebook page, awkward to carry around but quite ingenious. She crafted this life size version out of foam board and pasted her timeline to it. All with perfect proportions, with her face as her profile picture. One of the guys from the Hangover, complete with realistic and creepy baby securely placed in a baby carrier. Also in attendance was the entire US and German Olympic drinking team from the movie Beer Fest (a movie the academy has obviously failed to recognize). After some probing, and a few shots, one of the US teammates confided that all 9 of them bought their costumes online for $100 each. That is the kind of dedication that makes the United States the greatest nation in the free world.
So to answer the question: Can you ever be too old for a pub crawl? You’re only too old if you think having fun and meeting new people is a phase you get over during high school. If you want to have a fun time and you don’t take yourself too seriously, you will have a blast. I look forward to the next one on Saturday November 16th on the Upper East Side. This charity bar tour will help benefit City Harvest. Having fun and supporting a cause sounds like a good time to me. I look forward to sharing a drink with you!
