The Amigos Drum Thunder Party
“Drumtopia” is the best way to describe what happened on the stage of Joe’s Pub at The Amigos Drum Thunder Party. With the help of several percussion magicians, The Amigos put on an accordion driven, Americana-folk/jazz/rock performance that left the whole crowd hungry for more.
Dressed in matching western apparel, The Amigos kickoff the show with some top tracks from their latest album, Diner In The Sky. The devoted fans sing along as the Alabama-inspired band keeps things country with the washboard and cowbell. The show then moves along to celebrate all American music; putting a southern style on many iconic classics. Including hits from Aretha Franklin and a rendition of “Hey Joe” that is truly unique. But at the pulse of each performance were the drums. Bongos, djembes, and tablas helped spice up the night and liven up the set. A personal highlight was when the main drummer switched his drumsticks out for kitchen knives.
By the end of the show, the whole venue was singing along to “Country Roads” and each one of us became honorary Amigos. From beginning to end, The Amigos Drum Thunder Party proved to be as inspiring as it was entertaining. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes things “a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll” and I look forward to seeing what The Amigos have in store for us next.
