When we think about New York and its geographic location, water immediately comes to mind. We’re surrounded by water everywhere. Manhattan is obviously an island but all of those great beaches that are so close and lakes up north are because of New York’s perfect location. This is also part of the reason why we’re so saturated and desirable.
So, what happens when you’re surrounded by water and people are trying to get around? Bridges and tunnels! Yes, B&T! This is not an article about the people who invade our city every weekend but a piece on an awesome bridge that just reopened! Completed in 1848, The High Bridge is now the oldest bridge in New York City. The bridge crosses the Harlem River, connecting the New York City boroughs of the Bronx and Manhattan. It runs 1,200 feet shore to shore and stands 116 feet above the river. And when a walkway was completed in 1864, the High Bridge became a place to promenade or a path between boroughs. The bridge has been closed to all traffic since the 1970s but is finally reopening and to boot, on the Manhattan side of the bridge, a huge swimming pool sits in Highbridge Park and will open for the summer at the end of the month. More water!
We’re pretty stoked for this walk and summer activity! You should probably make your plans NOW.
