If you are a lover of confectioneries and lucky enough to live in New York City, then you should know about one of the greatest candy stores in the world. Obviously, it exists in our hometown, and we can take a trip there any time we want. Just head to the Lower East Side and visit Economy Candy!
Economy Candy began as a shoe and hat repair shop which had a pushcart outside that sold candy. When the Depression hit in the thirties the candy cart started bringing in more business than the shoe store and in 1937 the business transformed into Economy Candy. When Morris “Moishe” Cohen and his brother in law returned from World War II they took over the business and expanded into selling candy, chocolate, gift baskets, dried fruit, nuts and more. Fast forward today and there is an 85th Birthday Party happening!
There will be FREE tastings from the chocolatiers at Gotham Bar & Grill behind Gotham Chocolates, Tony’s Chocolonely and the sweet makers at both Tazzy Candy and Zweets. Mikey Like’s It Ice Cream will be joining front with an Economy Candy inspired flavor, their friends at Jellio will be sponsoring an incredibly special birthday giveaway, Ring Pop will be hosting a sweet guessing game and they will have a prize wheel full of free passes to CandyTopia, Color Factory, Jellio World, and sweet treats galore from their partners at Jomart and Tony’s Chocolonely. Plus, there will be a penny candy cart stationed outside of the shop, free pickles from The Pickle Guys and limited edition anniversary merch will be available.
Economy Candy’s Rivington Street neighbors at Restocked NYC, Edith Machinist and El Castillo will also be taking their operations to the sidewalk to celebrate with Serafina LES, Verlaine, Welcome to the Johnson’s and Pretty Ricky’s will be serving up Economy Candy inspired cocktails for those 21+.
It is going to be an epic celebration that is not to be missed! Line up candy lovers, this only happens once every 85 years! For more information, visit https://economycandy.com/85th-anniversary-celebration/
