If you are interested in old New York City or fantasize about ‘The Good Old Days’ then you can’t imagine Manhattan without thinking of the Garment District. The area where the streets looked like aisles of a department store as racks of clothing crossed the streets and seamstresses were everywhere. While that is not longer the same vibe in the neighborhood, it has evolved into one of the most exciting places in New York City. And, its getting even better – with art!
Located on the Broadway plazas in the Garment District between 39th and 40th Streets, Shaved Portions represents beauty, rhythm and common humanity in the city and at large. The sculpture – which is free for viewing and will be available to the public through November 1 – is part of Garment District Art on the Plazas, a year-round public art program made possible through Arterventions, a subpart of the NYC Department of Transportation’s Art Program (NYC DOT Art). It’s a pretty special time to visit The Garment District. Shaved Portions was created by renowned artist Chakaia Booker – a 35-foot-tall abstract sculpture made of deconstructed rubber tires. Sounds pretty cool, yes? Well, its all being unveiled this week and you don’t want to miss it! Our city is filled with all forms of art and free art to boot. This is another piece of our city’s fabric that we love and cherish and cant wait to experience.
