The War on Drugs, from Philadelphia, are probably best known for the one-time membership of Kurt Vile, whose Smoke Ring For My Halo has drawn some of this year’s most enthusiastic reviews. But like his erstwhile homie, Drugs dude Adam Granduciel has an impressive knack for the kind of broke-down, psych-streaked Americana that honors its forebears (Dylan, the Band, et al) without feeling like a museum piece. On Slave Ambient, the outfit’s brand-new one, Granduciel even sneaks some future into “Your Love Is Calling My Name,” a throbbing guitar jam that bridges the considerable distance between Düsseldorf and Nashville.- Village Voice
