On Monday night, January 6, 2014 Barnes and Noble at Union Square hosted an author event with phenomenal American actress and former model, Cameron Diaz. She rose to prominence during the 1990s with roles in the movies The Mask, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and There’s Something About Mary, and she just recently published her first book.

I know what you all are thinking… A world known actress, turned author? Why, yes, yes indeed. I also was taken aback a little by the shocking news, yet really interested in learning more about her new endeavor since she had always been a favorite Hollywood figure of mine.

Throughout her career, Cameron Diaz has been a role model for millions of women. Her new book, The Body Book: The Law of Hunger, the Science of Strength, and Other Ways to Love Your Amazing Body, shares her formula for becoming happier, healthier, and stronger. It’s a positive, essential guide that is grounded in science and inspired by personal experience. Crazy Diaz fans, body and fitness enthusiasts, as well as general book worms all cleared their Monday night to attend the anticipated celebrity guest book talk. Special event seating was filled around 6PM with a crowded audience and swarm of press both calmly awaiting Diaz’s arrival.

Finally, she entered the room a little after 7PM looking rejuvenated as ever sporting an au naturel look, high ponytail, shimmery navy and white horizontal striped tunic, black pants, black leather jacket, and an elegant drop pendant necklace. Her presence immediately filled the quiet room with much joy and hope.

“We don’t know how our body works. We go to school to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic to eventually get a job in order to buy food and a roof over our head, ” Diaz first explained in her opening remarks.

When asked why she decided to become an author, Diaz disclosed, “It first started as a website, but then I wanted to fully speak on my philosophy. I wrote this book because I wanted to condense information for everyone to learn about their body. I want people to have the most exceptional experience living in a healthy body that’s capable and thriving. I’m 41 years old and I can’t wait to see how much more I can do, and how much stronger I can become!”

Diaz continued to convey, “Everything is connected in the world and everything in your body is connected too. The slightest change creates a ripple effect.” She began to speak of the study of the microbiom and how it breaks down food to distribute nutrition. “It’s becoming more important to health and about 3 pounds of bacteria is responsible for our overall health.”
Her passion for the subject matter showed as she noted to stop comparing yourself to others. Diaz shared a quote she saw on Instagram, “Comparison is a brutal assault on oneself.” She believes that it’s interesting but true because we as a society constantly tell ourselves what we do have isn’t good enough, which is very diminishing.

After the book talk, Cameron Diaz did a Q&A with the audience. When asked about her diet, she shared she doesn’t use the word “diet,” instead she uses “nutrition.” If you eat the right things, you can definitely make room to eat bad things. “I believe that health is an equation of 10 choices,” Diaz explained. “You should make 6 or 7 good choices a day. I never go below 5.”
Her take home message for women was, “It’s your responsibility to take care of your heath, period. No one else takes care of it and no one is going to force you to do it. You have to want to do it.” She encourages not to beat yourself up or have any expectations because the road to better health happens over the course of a lifetime.

Overall, The Body Book is meant to empower readers to make the most informed choices possible. “Once you let go of all negative energy, you now have all energy possible to push out into the world to do positive and motivating things,” Diaz expressed.
After the Q&A, she invited all attendees who purchased the book up to the stage row by row for a quick meet and greet as well as autographs. I had purchased 2 books and was in the 4th row, so I was definitely excited! One book was for me, and the other was for my sorority (alpha Kappa Deta Phi) National Alumne Board Secret Santa gift exchange, which I hope my person loves because I put a lot of thought into choosing this gift for her. She’s really into learning more about strenthening her body, health, and fitness, so I knew this would be the perfect gift. It just made sense!
Meeting Cameron Diaz was beyond amazing. Her energy was uplifting and I cannot wait to start reading her book soon! It seems like it’s going to be a great read and resource.
