New York City is the home to a ton of parades and in true New York fashion, we turn every parade into a party. In fact, it doesn’t really matter what is being celebrated and how relevant it may be in your life, there is certainly an excuse to party every time the procession rolls through our streets.
This Sunday will be no different as the Greeks roll down 5th Avenue on Sunday, June 5, 2022. While Greek Independence Day is typically celebrated on March 25th, it has been pushed back due to everything that has been going on the past few years. The Greek parade in NYC is the largest parade outside of Greece with tens of thousands of spectators of Hellenic and Philhellenic backgrounds. The parade has proven to be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the rich heritage and culture to American society. And, as we mentioned earlier, this parade is for everyone!
The Parade Committee of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York has received confirmation from the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic that a contingent of the Presidential Guard Corps, the Evzones, will travel to New York to march in the Greek Independence Day Parade on Sunday right on Fifth Avenue. The Evzones will also take part in the other scheduled parade events and uplift the spirits of the Greek-American community. This is what kicks off the party! The Evzones’ delegation (18 soldiers and four officers) is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, June 2 and depart on Monday afternoon, June 6. If you haven’t seen this, it’s certainly worth a look.
We also mentioned the party. Once this parade completes, people will scurry all over our city to enjoy some delicious Greek food. We recommend heading to Astoria, Queens where you’ll certainly find a ton of great Greek food and culture!
