With the weather comes a different town. Consistent with every other season, each one brings a unique experience to our city and summer is no different. Probably our favorite (as are the other 3), this season lends itself to plenty of outdoor activities and since most of us live in smallish spaces, we love being outside! There is no shortage of rooftop activities, outdoor yoga, baseball games and just days in the park. In addition to all of that, our town sometimes kicks it up a notch where it adds an element and flair that can only be found on our island. This event is just that.
If you love music and appreciate some good jazz, then you have to check out the Jazz Age Lawn Party! Now celebrating its 19th year, it is the world’s original and most authentic Prohibition-era-inspired gathering. It started in 2005 as a small gathering on NYC’s Governors Island and has since been consistently selected by the New York Times as one of the year’s most memorable events. Jazz Age Lawn Party, a historically sold-out experience, attracts thousands of time travelers each year, who come together to discover the music and zeitgeist of the 1920s. Founded and hosted by Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra, it offers a unique, interactive opportunity to relive one of the most colorful and formative epochs in American history. Don’t miss out!
Witness the bedazzling Dreamland Follies, a ten-lady Art Deco dance spectacle evoking the great Ziegfeld, the fantastic Queen Esther paying tribute to jazz royalty of yore, and Peter Mintun with his incredible piano skills. Listen to the Gelber & Manning band’s beautiful music before enjoying the world-renowned and fun-loving dance troupe, Roddy Caravella and The Canarsie Wobblers, with their scandalous Charleston numbers and rebellious and exuberant spirit of Roaring ‘20s youth.
This is an epic event and Governor’s Island is just the place to host. Don’t miss out!
