The eclectic guitarist-composer’s lovely new Search, which this gig celebrates, blends jazz improvisation with classical writing without a whiff of cliché. Saxophonist Donny McCaslin sounds particularly inspired on an album containing a stirring 15-minute tribute to a dead friend, a sweet arrangement of Messiaen’s “O Sacrum Convivium,” and a nasty “Whipping Post” mit strings.
