The month of February often gets overlooked in the event space. Sure, its still winter and it feels like we’re living in arctic conditions but there is plenty to do and things to look forward to. This past week, we enjoyed the Superbowl, Valentines Day and now have Presidents Day to look forward to! Yes, it’s a Holiday that keeps us out of the office (thank you George) but its so much more.
The day was originally intended to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. Washington’s Birthday is a holiday in the United States celebrated on the third Monday of February to honor all persons who served in the office of president of the United States. What few people know is that George Washington’s birthday actually depends on the calendar you’re using – according to an old-style calendar, he was born on February 11th, while our more modern calendar has him born on February 22nd. You know we love our fun facts here at New York Events. At the end of the day, we get a federal holiday, meaning an extra day to spend some time in New York exploring. And that’s what we love more than anything else!
New York state is one of six states to still call Presidents’ Day “Washington’s Birthday.” In comparison, almost half of the state governments have renamed this day honoring the presidents to Presidents’ Day – or some combination of Lincoln and Washington. It may be Abe and George but really its about you! No matter what you’re looking to do with the extra day off, whether it’s checking out a new exhibit or dressing up like George Washington, there are plenty of activities that will spice up your Presidents’ Day Weekend. We like to think of it as a way to ‘catch up’. You know, do things we always say we’re going to do and be a tourist in our city!
