2014 Couture Fashion Week

2014 Couture Fashion Week

While everyone is trying hard to get around New York City during perhaps the most brutal Winter season – and handling reservations for Valentine’s Day weekend – our itinerary was all about attending Couture Fashion Week. A bi-annual event that takes place in various venues around Manhattan – this time we came together with other Fashionistas on the second floor ballroom of the iconic New Yorker Hotel – just a hop, skip, and jump from Madison Square Garden.

The chairs finally fill up and we are amazed on how everyone really pushes the limit in the name of fashion- and why not – after all The Big Apple is the Mecca of chic – isn’t it?. At least your writer was prepared for the madness for a couple of days – epic cocktail rings, shiny necklaces and bracelets, faux- fur bolero jackets, leather pants, fitted jumpsuits, pencil skirts, and tasseled high-heeled boots – yep we can proudly proclaim our small contribution to this great event.

That said, once the show started we loved the Fall Collections introduced by Nonyelum Okonknow (Nigerial), Laurie Elyse (USA), Marisol Henriquez (Dominican Republic) and Otgoo Couture by Otgonjargal Demberelsuren of Mongolia – just to name a few on the first day. Sadly, the choice becomes even more difficult on the second and third day when we have to choose other favorites. Dominika Stara takes the stage and headlines a few minutes before showtime on Sunday.

After the round of applause Chinese- American Yi-Ling Li takes us on a tour on traditional modern couture for both genders.

Attention please! – that’s right Lourdes Attencio takes the stage immediately after Yi-Ling – and the whole collection spells out nothing short of lace, sequins, beads, beautifully crafted gowns with eye catching colors – is it considered greedy if we want everything– including the wedding gowns? For a very small minute the thought of getting hitched sprinted across the mind – then we clicked back to reality. Apparently, step one includes finding a mate and then once that is complete we can reach out to Lourdes and talk about custom gowns.

Andres Aquino (USA) who premiered his collection titled “Mon Amour” on February 13, made a repeat cameo that Sunday with “Femme Jolie” – which also included attire for men as well.

What have we learned? Lace, leather, bright colors, and geometrical patterns should be in for the upcoming Fall – even though most of us can think of nothing but to look forward to Summer at this point- especially after these frigid temperatures. Couture- or fashion as a whole- is the universal language of expression.

It is always a pleasure to see designers who are comfortable living on the edge to share with us the passion of creating something eccentrically bold yet classy, daring yet simple and mind- blowing but memorable with tons of pizzazz. If you missed Couture Fashion Week this time, wipe off those tears because it will return to the runway in September with everyone else during NY Fashion Week for the 2015 Spring/Summer Collection.
