We missed a full year and then some of New York staples. These range from restaurants that were closed, sites that we couldn’t access and the recurring events that we have marked on our calendar year-round. We’re happy to report that one of those staples is coming back in person. The Tribeca Film Festival is on from June 9th through the 20th.
If you don’t know or haven’t experienced the event, the Tribeca Film Festival brings together visionaries across industries and diverse audiences to celebrate the power of storytelling. It’s our version of Hollywood and can only happen in our city. The platform for independent filmmaking, creative expression and immersive entertainment supports emerging and established voices, discovers award-winning filmmakers, curates innovative and interactive experiences, and introduces new technology and ideas through panels, premieres, exhibitions, and live performances.
Founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001, following the attacks on the World Trade Center, Tribeca has evolved from an annual event to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan to a gathering place for filmmakers, artists, innovators, and the global creative community. Through programs that embrace storytelling in all of its expansive forms—film, TV, online work, VR/AR, and music—TFF reimagines the cinematic experience and explores how art can unite communities.
To add some more good news to this announcement, the Film Festival organizers announced that the much-anticipated Jon M. Chu-directed In The Heights musical will be this year’s opening film. “It is such an honor to open the 20th anniversary Tribeca Festival within the Heights,” said Miranda in an official statement. Like we said, a New York only event. In honor of the event’s 20th anniversary, opening night screenings will be broadcast at multiple outdoor venues all across the five boroughs. This means no excuses to miss and more options for you!
