The Subway Series returns this weekend, and even if the Mets haven’t exactly given their fans much to celebrate this season, there’s still something different about Mets-Yankees baseball in New York.
The Mets head across town to Yankee Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday, September 11 at 7:05 p.m., followed by afternoon games Saturday and Sunday at 1:35 p.m.
For the Yankees, the series arrives with plenty at stake. The Bronx Bombers remain in the postseason hunt as September baseball heats up. The Mets, meanwhile, are playing out a disappointing season that has them buried in the National League East.
But records have a funny way of becoming less important when these two teams meet.
The Mets already proved that earlier this season. When the Yankees visited Citi Field in May, the Mets dropped the opener 5-2 before responding with a 6-3 victory and a dramatic 7-6 win in 10 innings to take two of three.
So, yes, Mets fans still have something to play for: ruining the Yankees’ weekend.
Beyond the standings, the Subway Series remains one of those uniquely New York sporting events. Yankee fans and Mets fans share offices, neighborhoods, bars, families and group chats all year long. For three games, all of that gets a little louder.
And if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, heading to the Bronx is an easy choice. Grab a pregame drink or bite near the Stadium, settle in for some September baseball and enjoy one of the city’s best sports rivalries.
The Mets may not be headed where their fans hoped they would be this October, but taking another series from the Yankees would at least provide a little satisfaction.
Sometimes, when the season goes sideways, bragging rights are all you’ve got.
